Landing pages matter for Google Ads — here’s why

Published September 10, 2025 | Updated September 10, 2025

The most common mistake I see when a business invests in Google Ads is using the home page for ad landing pages. Here’s the problem: a homepage tries to do everything at once. Visitors click away quickly if they don’t see what they came for.

Your home page introduces your brand, lists all of your services, includes testimonials or reviews, and includes a news and blog section. It acts as an introduction to your website, offering a first impression, a broad overview of your site’s content or offerings, and clear navigation to other pages.

The purpose of a landing page is a specific, measurable action, or conversion, such as generating leads, making a sale, or signing up for an event.

That’s why I build dedicated landing pages for ad campaigns; they are streamlined pages with a single goal. I’ve been working on a series of landing pages for a client in the home improvement industry, and the results highlight why this approach works so well.

What makes landing pages different

A landing page is a page built for a single purpose: turning ad clicks into leads. Unlike your homepage, it isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, it’s:

  • Focused: The headline, content, and call-to-action all support the same message.
  • Streamlined: No extra navigation and no distractions – just the information someone needs to take the next step.
  • Conversion-driven: Forms, phone numbers, or booking buttons are front and center.

Why I build landing pages on subdomains

I’ve been building landing pages for a home improvement client using subdomains. This approach has several advantages:

  • Independence from the main site: Landing pages won’t interfere with the design, structure, or SEO of your primary website.
  • Faster performance: I can use a lightweight theme and minimal plugins, which makes these pages load faster. Google rewards fast pages with better Quality Scores, which lowers ad costs.
  • Ad-specific setup: Because the pages exist only for ad traffic, they can be marked noindex so they don’t appear in search results. They don’t need long-term SEO work because they’re built to convert ad clicks right now.

Why speed matters so much

In Google Ads, every second of page load time matters. Research shows that conversion rates drop with each added second a page takes to load. Google also factors landing page experience and load speed into your Quality Score. That means:

  • Faster pages = lower bounce rates
  • Lower bounce rates = more conversions
  • Better Quality Scores = lower cost per click

In short, when you invest in faster, focused landing pages, your ad budget goes further.

I ran a speed test on a recent landing page I built. The website received GTmetrix Grade A! The page fully loaded in 1.1 seconds. A web page that loads this fast provides a great user experience. I recommend GTmetrix for testing web page speed as it is highly regarded and provides valuable insight.

GTmetrix Grade A 99% performance for landing page

My client noticed the difference immediately:

“As I watch the results of our new painting landing page trickle in, the page is loading fast and converting at a much higher rate.” — Home Improvement Client

The business benefits

When businesses switch from sending ad traffic to their homepage to using a dedicated landing page, they see immediate improvements:

  • Higher conversion rates: More visitors fill out a form or call.
  • Lower ad spend: Better relevance and faster load times improve Google Ads efficiency.
  • Clearer tracking: Each page ties directly to one service or campaign, so it’s easy to measure what’s working.

Industry benchmarks help put this into perspective:

  • Across all industries, Google Ads conversion rates average about 4–5%.
  • In home services, the average is around 7–8%, and for paint & painting specifically, it’s about 10–11%.

Here’s what happened for my client:

“Thanks for the great work on the landing pages. We have moved the conversion rate from under 1% to 6–9% on the painting landing page depending on the day, which puts us in the good category.” — Home Improvement Client

Another campaign performed even better:

“The new painting page on Google’s campaign has a 16% conversion rate. Our first attempt was under 1%. So we need to pat ourselves on the back!” — Home Improvement Client

These results aren’t just improvements — they’re exceptional. Moving from below 1% to 6–9% puts this client at or above the industry average, and hitting 16% far exceeds even the best benchmarks for home improvement campaigns.

In summary, landing pages are the bridge between your Google Ads investment and your next customer. By creating dedicated, fast, subdomain-based landing pages, you can make every click count.
